How Easy Is It To Find Someone's Phone Number, Email And Password? A Cyber Expert Explains
"Finding someone's contact is a five-minute job."
On the Accompany Akki podcast, cyber crime expert Dr. Kanishk Gaur explained how exposed our personal data really is, and why almost anyone's details can be found.
Whose data can be found?
According to Dr. Gaur, anyone's. That includes ordinary users, Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, and even the Prime Minister.
Where does this data come from?
- Contact data platforms. Some legitimate businesses sell contact information for sales and recruitment. Dr. Gaur named ZoomInfo and SignalHire as examples.
- Leaked databases on the dark web. If you've ever entered your number or email on a website that was later hacked, your data may already be in a leaked database.
Investigators search these databases to see whether a specific number or email appears in a particular breach.
What kind of data is exposed?
- Mobile numbers
- Email addresses
- Passwords
- Intimate images
Why celebrities seem harder to reach
A number listed under a celebrity's name is often actually used by their manager. The number is out there, but it reaches a gatekeeper rather than the celebrity.
How experts search leaked data
Dr. Gaur's team uses AI agents to run searches on the dark web for a person's name, for example to find how many intimate images of them have already leaked. He says this growing work requires more skilled cybersecurity experts.
How to protect yourself
This section is general guidance, not from the conversation.
- Assume your number and email are already exposed. Focus on protecting passwords, OTPs and sensitive content.
- Check for breaches. Use services such as Have I Been Pwned to see whether your email has appeared in known breaches.
- Use unique passwords. A password manager helps. Never reuse passwords across sites.
- Enable multi-factor authentication, especially on email and banking.
- Use a secondary number and email for shopping, apps and signups.
- Request profile removal from contact data platforms where possible.
- Never share OTPs or PINs with callers.
- Protect intimate content. Avoid storing it on internet-connected devices. If it leaks, use StopNCII.org and report it at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
Key takeaways
- Contact details for almost anyone can be found quickly.
- Data comes from both legal data platforms and leaked dark web databases.
- Passwords and intimate images also appear in leaks.
- Experts now use AI agents to detect exposed data.
- Protect what matters most: passwords, OTPs, banking access and private content.
